Israel uses a verse from the Quran to answer Egyptian Prime Minister
BFnews: Interestingly, the Israeli Foreign Ministry based its words on an article in the Kuwaiti newspaper carrying a frank incitement on Egypt. The writer Abdullah Hadlaq wrote in the article: The almighty God tells us to fulfill the contracts and abide by covenants and not to break treaties. He urges us to that in the first Surah ‘Al-maeida’ which says: “You who have believed! Fulfill the contracts". He questions how the Egyptian Prime Minister Issam Sharaf declares contrary to what God has commanded us and urged upon us; to fulfill the obligation of contracts and covenants, by saying: “The peace treaty with Israel is not holy, and can be changed”?!

In a statement to Rose Al-Youssef, the official spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, the adviser Amro Rushdie commented with surprise on the Israeli response, saying: “God strengthen the faith!!”

Rushdie said that the Vienna Convention on Treaties of 1996 governs the procedures to terminate international treaties and also organizes procedures for concluding them. He said that it is a well established principle in international law, which does not necessarily mean that Egypt will terminate the peace treaty with Israel. However, if one side failed to commit, the other side will not have to commit longer.
